Terry's father had been killed by Comanche Indians while serving with the Mexican Army during the Mexican–American War. When Terry's mother learned her son had given up his claim to the land near Nighthawk, she sent him back to claim it and renamed the community after him. The first store opened in 1951 and soon there were several other businesses located around what is now Main Street. The current shopping center was built in 1976 and today serves as the centerpiece of downtown Terrell. The center has a movie theater, art galleries, restaurants and nightlife options. It also has several distinctive features including its own ZIP code (87607).
Terrell was founded by George W. Terrell in 1876. It is the most recent town to be incorporated in Texas.
