The Terrell, Texas, history began in 1892 when the town was founded by John H. Dietz. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Terrell after General James B. Terry who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as Mayor of Terrell from 1907 to 1909. The population of Terrell increased rapidly during World War I due to the influx of soldiers and their families; however, the war ended without any combat on either side and no new residents were born in Terrell until 1920. In 1929, a water tower was erected within what is now downtown Terrell and it became an important landmark for both the community and its citizens because it provided drinking water for all residents within a radius of three miles (5 km). Additionally, this water tower allowed for easy access to groceries, local businesses and other amenities that were available only outside of town during those days. Downtown Terrell experienced another growth spurt during World War II due to its importance as a munitions plant; however, like most towns throughout Texas at this time, there was little development or growth occurred after World War II until economic times changed with suburbanization becoming more prevalent in America beginning in the late 1960s. By 1973, when oil prices peaked and then began declining nationally due to overproduction by OPEC countries, much activity had stopped outside of downtown Terrell which led to declines in business activity overall within the once vibrant community center since many small businesses closed down during difficult times with few opportunities for survival other than through tourism or retail operations that catering only to visitors rather than locals who could provide services such as construction jobs or marketing support. Since 2003-2004 there has been some redevelopment taking placewithin DowntownTerrel including several new shops/restaurants/polo fields/etc., but these have not brought about significant mixed-use developments (such as creating a continuous commercial strip along one edge of downtown) that would improve traffic flow around central business district core while preserving essential historical elements such as intact buildings dating back more than 100 years
Terrell, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Terrell was founded in 1879 by Methodist Episcopalians and Education League of Texas members. The community had a schoolhouse and a Baptist church until 1906 when it became an all-electric town. The first post office in Terrell opened in 1881. In 1902, the name changed to Teller to honor Major General George Armstrong Custer who died that year from typhoid fever at Fort Reno on the Indian Territory. In 1912, Terrell annexed neighboring towns of Lewisville and Palestine which had been Villages since 1907. In 1928, Pace School District No. 6 merged with Williamson County Schools to form the new Pace School District No. 1 which included Terrell along with Lewisville and Palestine which were then farmland belonging to Pace for several years after annexation before being developed into housing developments known as "The Hills". (Pace also annexation including unincorporated territory east of Highway 287.) A cotton gin was built in 1915 by Jno W Bellows on land donated by Judge Julius Hatcher near what is now downtown Terrell to process cottonseed oil extracted from the nearby Mabank Ranch run by Ladd Paper Manufacturing Company (now United States Paper Corporation). A post office was established at Teller on November 3, 1915 underName "Lewisville" but it closed February 14, 1916 because mail ran aground on Calvary Hillock Creek during peak harvesting season.(See official USGS map) . On October 7th 1918 an inspection tour led by Mrs John Hargrave resulted in orders for all American troops within 50 miles be evacuated from Montero Peninsula due to high levels of malaria caused by mosquitos particularly during hot weather months such as May through September; this order became effective October 15th This order ended World War I As Malaria rapidly spread throughout Europe European Americans began returning home; however many soldiers did not return home until after Armistice Day (November 11th) Many veterans never received treatment for their malaria so their illness continued undiagnosed until long after they left military service In 1920 Mr O’Neill donated his three acre lot across highway 287 from present day downtown Terrell towards what would become Maple Lawn Cemetery where he laid out graves for his family and many other relatives buried there including his namesake General George Armstrong Custer
