Terrell, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. The local high school, Alice B. Toklas High School, offers a variety of classes for students from all around the country as well as domestic and foreign students. The name "Terrell" was given to the town by pioneer James Tillery on October 7, 1836 because he named a hillock after General John Custer's regiment which had passed through that area on their way to this new settlement called Fort Harker. Terrell was originally part of Clay County but it was organized into Hudspeth County in 1867 when it became part of the newly formed United States Territory of Texas. The first post office in Terrell opened on December 12, 1876 with Jerald Wiebe as its first supervisor. In 1901, an elevator being built by Raymond McNaught allowed farmers and others to rise directly to their homes above their fields during good weather without having to go down into rain or snowdrifts. By 1914, there were over 100 businesses in town including grocery stores, druggists, blacksmiths, telephones (the only one at that time), banks (four ATMs), schools (two public schools and one private school), theaters (one movie theater and one music hall) and two churches- First Baptist Church and Second Methodist Church-. In 1965 then-Governor Connally designated Hudspeth County as one of twelve counties within Texas set aside for development along Interstate 35 between Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and Houston Airport - this included Terrell along with Cedar Hill Village near Lubbock also destined for development although neither village received any federal money until after Connally's death due to illness in 1984). In 1984 Representative Garnett Coleman announced plans by Texaco Incorporated - parent company of ExxonMobil Corporation - to build an oil refinery adjacent to Alice B Toklas High School site which would create 400 jobs; however these plans never came true due to opposition by many citizens who felt that they would impact their personal quality of life too much while destructive traffic patterns would result from increased production at nearby Refineries Park outside downtown Austin; finally construction stopped altogether in 1990 when Texaco merged with Mobil Oil Corporation creating what is now known as ChevronTexaco Incorporated ().
