Terrell was founded in 1879 by pioneers and cattlemen, including James A. Terrell and his brothers. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Comanche River, which made it a popular place for ranching and farming. In 1905, Terrell became the seat of government for the County of Webb. In 1915, World War I began and the United States military responded with a large-scale drive into Mexico. As a result of this conflict, many Texans left their homes to join the army or fight in Europe. The town's infrastructure was quickly destroyed as refugees flooded in, but within a few years most of the buildings had been repaired or replaced. After World War II ended, Terrell experienced significant growth as newly built subdivisions were developed along the river. Today, Terrell is an important cultural center and economic hub in eastern Webb County.
