Terrell was founded in 1867 by James W. Terrell and his brother, George Washington Terrell. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had died in 1865 during the American Civil War. The town's first store was built on the site of present-day White Settlement Cemetery. In 1886, Terrell became a cattle ranching center with its first cow corral. By 1907, the population of Terrell had reached 1,500 people. In 1915, the Palestine-based Arabs began to settle in what is now known as Tyler County after coming to Texas from Palestine in 1913 through a U.S.–British mandate program known as "The New West". After World War I ended with Russia's victory over Austria-Hungary and entry into the war on Germany's side, many Germans moved into Texas and established their own communities east of the Red River near Dallas and Fort Worth. Among these new settlers were some farmers who bought land around White Settlement Cemetery where they began to erect homes using materials brought over by Railroads companies from Illinois and other Midwest cities that were destroyed during World War I. In 1923, when Judge Royce Lamberth became justice of the peace for Tyler County, he decided that White Settlement should be officially renamed "Terrrell" after himself and fellow justices Edward Coyle (1879–1966) and Harry Dickey (1887–1964). On April 28, 1923, Lamberth presented a resolution to this effect at a meeting of the governing board of trustees for White Settlement Cemetery which read: "Resolved that upon request made by Mr Justice Lamberth it be Properly Named 'Terrrell' within this Township." The name change gave rise to ridicule among some locals because it could only be pronounced as TERR-elll (the letter e is pronounced like an i while r is pronounced like a y). However, most residents soon adapted to their new name and enjoyed wearing signage reading "Welcome To Terrrell!"
Terrell was founded in 1868 by John A. Terrell and his wife, Margaret. The town is named for the first settler, James A. Terrell, who arrived in 1851. The town began as a small community of about twenty-five people and grew rapidly during the early years of its existence. By 1870, the population had increased to more than one hundred people, and by 1880 it had reached over two thousand residents. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of four thousand people.
