"When he reached here they discovered that east Texan leaders had evacuated their towns upstream along the Red River before Battle Creek opened up near Austin hours after they'd been ordered to do so.""It is interesting to note that while East Texans abandoned their towns upstream - probably because they were fearsalongside Confederate cannon fire - West Texans remained behind and defended their city against Ewell's raiders," Waddy added."Many residents of easternTX took refuge within walls surrounding Austin prior to battle creek openingUPstream" Aftermath: Aftermath East Texans who abandoned their Townsupper downstream soon found themselves under artillery fire from Confederate skirmishers positioned atop hills just outside Austin waiting for ordersMajestic Travis County Courthouse stands today one mile south across San Marcos Creek still standing testamentto this day
