In the early 1800s, Terrell was a small town in central Texas. It was one of the few communities in Texas that did not rely on slavery to provide its citizens with basic needs. This allowed for small-scale gun ownership and use, which helped contribute to the town's strong militia tradition. The town also developed an important trade with nearby San Antonio, which played a significant role in local economy. The first firearms were used inTerrell during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). From 1847 until 1851, Terrell residents fought against Mexico at the Battle of Palo Alto. As part of this effort, many residents took up arms and wore firearm t-shirts as part of their uniform. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Terrell served as a border fortress between Confederate States of America and Union States of America. In 1865, it fell to Union forces after Confederate General Don Carlos Buell surrendered at Peña Blanca Pass. The term "firearm shirt" originated in the early 1800s in Terrell, Texas. At that time, rifle and Pistol Club members would go door to door in order to buy arms for their club. Many of these arms were made from cotton twill fabric and had a stenciled or painted image of a firearm on the front.
When Terrell, Texas was founded in 1879, it was a small community of just over 100 people. By the turn of the century, however, the population had exploded to more than 4,000 people and the town started to develop. The first school in Terrell opened in 1881 and by 1907 there were six schools in the town. The economy of Terrell was based on agriculture and ranching until World War II when oil production began to increase in the area. After that point, industry began to grow as well and now Terrell is home to over 50 businesses including restaurants, hotels, media companies, and other large employers. The growth of industry has led to increased traffic congestion on local roads which has caused some serious problems for residents. One such issue is that many businesses closed down during recent years because they could not find enough employees or space to open up new stores. Another problem is that many people do not have access to transportation so they are unable to get around town or visit their friends and family. This has led some people to start protests against these conditions; one example being "Take Back the Streets" protests which take place every few weeks or so. Despite these issues,Terrell continues to be a vibrant community with a strong sense of community spirit and support for one another. There is little to know about Terrell, Texas history until the early 1800s. The town was located on the banks of the Brazos River and it was named for General James Fayette Worth, who fought in the Mexican-American War. At that time, Terrell was a small village consisting of only a few hundred people. However, by 1836, the town had grown to over 1,000 residents. In addition to its location on the banks of the Brazos River, Terrell also boasted a thriving cotton industry which contributed significantly to its growth. The first inhabitants of Terrell were Native Americans who lived there before European settlers arrived. Eventually, English and Spanish settlers arrived as well and began farming in what is now Terrell. By 1836, local farmers had developed a cotton gin and oil press in order to produce their own cotton crops. The town also prospered thanks to its location near major waterways and its easy access to transportation routes. During World War II, many skilled labor shortages arose due to wartime production restrictions. In response, Terrell organized itself into an agricultural cooperative known as The Cotton Belt Club in 1942. This organization helped Toombs County farmers obtain needed labor during wartime production runs without causing any damage to their crops or infrastructure. After World War II ended, many farms closed down and most of the population moved away from Terrell altogether-although some remain today as part of the community's heritage). In recent years, changes have occurred within Toombs County which have impacted both the demographics and economy of this area; however little is known about this specific historical context until recently (e.g., during Reconstruction). Consequently, much information aboutTerrell history must be learned through primary sources such as census data or oral histories contemporary with events/people involved therein (such as those collected by local historian Don Kempf).
