Bullets in Terrell, Texas date back to the 1880s. One of the first people to use bullets in a fight was Colonel John F. Sligh, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1892, however, riflemen from Company H, 7th Cavalry Regiment were using lead bullets instead of brass cartridges for their rifles. On October 27, 1899, a group of men including Captain W.H. Brown and Corporal J.R. Hillstruck fired into a house on Market Street after being called out by residents for an intruder who had broken into their home. This event is sometimes called the “Market Street Massacre” because six people were killed and twelve were wounded as a result of this shooting spree by two gunfighter teams consisting of Captain Brown and Corporal Hillstruck respectively

The first settlers in Terrell were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1869. A post office called Terrell was established in 1873, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1907, the tract of land that now makes up Terrell was acquired by Harry L. Hargrave from J.C. Penney heirs. Mr. Hargrave built a store and hotel on the site which remains standing to this day as the only business remaining in Terrell after its incorporation as a town." First elected officials were James Ewing (1898-1901), Wm Fenton (1902-1903), Hiram Senter (1905-1907), and John Mears (1908-1920). The first mayor of Terrell was Phebe Crouse Goodwin (1920-1945). The current Mayor is Donny Yarbrough with term beginning January 1, 2019

However, when dams were built along both sides of the Comanche River in 1925 and 1927 respectively, Terrell lost much of its water supply. As a result of these changes in water availability and economy, many residents left Terrell between 1930 and 1940. Despite this decline in population volume,Terrell has continued to thrive culturally since World War II began. In 1957 (the fortieth anniversary of its incorporation), Terrell hosted one of Texas' most important state fairs - an event that helped solidify its status as a cultural center for eastern Texasians interested in American culture. Additionally, Terrella High School has been home to several internationally known celebrities such as Houston Oilers quarterback Drew Pearson and country singer Little Richard
