TERRELL, TEXAS - A town of 6,000 people nestled in the rolling hills of central Texas, Terrell was founded in 1881 by Houston businessmen John W. Morton and George H. Smith. The two men named the town after their home state of Illinois, which they had just visited. The name stuck and Terrell continued to grow rapidly until it reached its current size in 1920. During the early years of Terrell’s growth, its residents relied on agriculture for their sustenance. However, as production shifted from farming to manufacturing during World War II, Terrell became an important link in the local economy. It was through this dynamic that the town developed a strong presence within Central Texas society and culture. Over time, however, economic conditions have beenibantering at Terrell as well. With a population of only 6,000 people today and dwindling resources available for development outside of retail trade and tourism-driven industries such as health care or education-the community has faced challenges withangible to most Texans:riminality rates; low levels of housing availability; limited access to job opportunities; and falling property values that have resulted in mass extinctions within certain demographic groups over time (elderly residents being particularly impacted). Despite these difficulties though, there are many community members who remain active participants in local governance structures including city councils and village meetings where decisions are made about day-to-day operations without needing unanimous consent or preference from all participants In recent years there has been some progress made towards remedying some aspects of these issues but much more needs to be done ifTerrell is going to continue making an impact on central Texas life
Terrell was founded in 1881 by John Terrell and his wife, Sarah. The community grew quickly, and by 1895 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1907, the town acquired its first school. By 1912, Terrell had a library and a post office.In 1916, the town became an independent city. In 1928, the City Council adopted a resolution proclaiming December 12th as "Christmas Day" in memory of John Terrell.
