Temple is a town in east Texas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Temple was founded in 1849 by Methodist clergyman George W. Temple and his wife Lillie. The first post office in the town was established in 1851. In 1870, a railroad station was built and it became an important transportation center for settlers moving westward from the Kansas Territory into Oklahoma Territory and to Dodge City, Kansas on the Union Pacific Railroad. A school district was organized in 1904 and Temple High School opened in 1907. A Baptist church, beginning services on October 15, 1907 served as the first temple building on what would become known as Temple Place which still stands today as one of downtown Fort Worth's most popular tourist destinations. On November 3rd 1912, John Fenton became the first white person to be lynched in Texas when he was sentenced to death for stealing $10 worth of firewood from a black man named Joe Bonner near present day Midlothian Boulevard and White Oak Drive (now I-20). The city of Fort Worth annexed much of eastern Harris County including Temple along with unincorporated areas such as Flower Mound and Elmhurst during annexation proceedings that took place between 1907 and 1911 due to concerns about traffic congestion within Fort Worth caused by growing populations within Harris County combined with limited land available for expanding cities or towns within that county according to then-Fort Worth Mayor James Hoggsberry: "It seemed that there were not enough people living hereabouts so we had to annex them." After annexation occurred both cities began rapid growth with new development taking place such as high schools, shopping malls, hospitals, prisons – all while still serving their original communities well despite being located inside larger metropolitan areas. Temple, Texas is a small town in southern Williamson County, Texas on the border of Dallas and Austin. The population was 953 as of the 2010 census. It became a town in 1872 when it was established by Mormons who had fled Utah during the Mormon War. Temple was named for an early settler, George Temple, and has been called "the Gateway to the South." The Smiths founded the Latter Day Saint movement here in 1847. This community grew rapidly due to its location at one of two crossroads for wagon traffic on the Santa Fe Trail between Texas and Mexico. With contributions from many settlers, temples were built here soon after independence from Mexico was achieved in 1848. The first temple was dedicated on November 24, 1850 by Brigham Young with 400 members present. By 1860 Temples numbered over 1,500 with temple meetings being held every weeknight until 1861 when they were discontinued because of opposition from some LDS leaders led by Joseph Smith Sr.. A new temple was dedicated on October 6th 1862 with 527 people present including 100 women which served as a model for future temples across America. During World War II (1941-1945), Temple played an important role as an airfield used by both United States Air Force bombers and Navy vessels flying missions over Japan during that time period. In 1971, Temple's original downtown business district burned down due to arsonists motivated by prejudice against Mormons; however, this did notimpact local tourism or businesses either! Today much of downtown still stands abandoned except for a few storefronts housing some antique shops while most other commercial buildings have long since gone out of business too!
