Founded in 1872 as a station on the Pacific Railway and named for Samuel H. Temple, Jr., president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T), it became a city on December 12, 1907. The Population of Temple peaked at 2,631 in 1950 before declining to 1,744 by 2010. In recent years there has been an increase in development around the community with new businesses opening up and more people moving into the area. The history of Temple dates back to 1872 when two entrepreneurs named John Crain and James Waddell founded the town on land they had purchased east of Pole Bridge near present-day Rice Lake. The town's first post office was established on March 3, 1873 under the name "Ogden." On July 4th 1870 Andrew Jordon donated land that would become what is now downtown Temple; this donation made possible one of Houston's most prestigious addresses - 711 Main Street - which was renamed University Avenue after then-President George Washington Carver's alma mater: Tuskegee Airmen Field Airport (now George Bush Presidential Library). In 1907 Temple became an independent city following annexation by Houston from Denton County; however it reverted to its county status upon incorporation into Johnson County as a result of population growth within Johnson County over time. On December 12th 1951, temple lost its charter as City Limits applied to all cities annexed into Johnson County which meant no political subdivisions could exist within city limits without prior approval from county commissioners; this decision paved way for continued growth and development around temple despite continuing challenges faced by many small towns throughout Texas during this time period including high rates of crime and infrastructure lack due to budget cuts during later administrations such as Ronald Reagan’s presidency
Temple was founded in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a religious and educational center for the area. The first president of Temple was George Washington Harris. In 1959, Temple merged with Dallas Seminary to create Drexel University.
