Temple, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town derives from Temple Baptist Church which was founded in 1872 by Reverend Solomon White and his congregation. The first post office in the area was called “Milwaukee’s Chapel” and opened on October 21, 1876. Milwaukee Drive became the first business street in Temple when it opened. The first school open in Temple was called “Pioneer School” which opened on November 15, 1876. In 1881, a new school building was erected on East Main Street and named after Mrs. Clements Vaught who Campaigned for President Hancock on behalf of the Methodist Episcopal Church at that time. Mrs. Vaught donated $5,000 to help build this new school building which served as our present day Elementary and Middle Schools until 1957 when they were both consolidated into one building and renamed again to honor Mrs. Clements Vaught (1921-2007). On October 16th 1907 a fire destroyed most of the buildings on SW 4th Street near downtown with only 6 residents remaining inside temple! This event helped spark what would become known as the "Temple Movement" which aimed to create more services for downtown businesses since many people lost their homes during that fire; these efforts led tothe establishment of what is now known as Downtown Temple Corporation Incorporated (DTCC) in 1987. DTCC continues to provide programming such as flea markets, concerts/street fairs, arts & crafts shows/festivals along with marketing services for local businesses within Downtown Temple including marketing research and public relations services
