The first gun target in Temple was a man with a bow and arrow. The first firearms were shotguns and rifles. There was only one rifle range at the time. It was used for practice by the police and other officials. In 1892, there were two gun ranges opened in Temple. The first one was on 20th Street and the second one on Elm Street. In 1896, three more ranges were opened in Temple: One on Elm Street, one on 19th Street, and one on 25th Street. On December 1st of that year, the state legislature passed an act authorizing the erection of a public building to be called “The State Rifle Range” which became the home of both Gun Ranges #1 & #2 in about 1902-1903. In 1907-1908 another public building was erected for use as a Gun Range (Gun Ranges 3 & 4). It is now known as the Frankfort Shooting Clubhouse Museum Complex located southeast of downtown Templeton off FM 1960 just past IH 35 South (just east of US 90)
