Temple, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, along the banks of the Red River. The population was 992 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1838 by Mormon pioneers who had arrived from Illinois and Iowa, and named after an Australian temple in British Columbia. Temple has been ruled by a number of different Native American tribes before being ceded to the United States in 1845 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city became a county seat in 1876 and was incorporated as a town on December 16, 1907. As Temple has grown its economy has diversified including manufacturing, health-care services, software development, retail trade and agriculture. The history of Temple runs back to 1838 when Mormon pioneers arrived from Illinois and Iowa with their families for what would become Utah Territory under Mexican rule. On July 6 that year they arrived at Fort Bridger near present-day Salt Lake City with hopes of finding land within this new territory which included all present-day Utah excepting parts that were now Denver County and Carbon County (now Larimer County). One week later they erected their first cabin here on what is now South Main Street while supplies continued to be brought upriver by boat daily ferrying goods between Fort Bridger and Provo Ferry Landing where goods were then transported downriver to Salt Lake City for market before being distributed throughout eastern Utah via wagon trains heading northward over the Great Plains en route to arriving at General James Wilkinson's armycamp near Independence Creek on July 29th preparatory to beginning their journey westward into what would become Oregon Territory; much like today's Mormons had done more than two centuries earlier! On October 10th Brigham Young announced that he intended to establish a LDS church located permanently eastward along what is now I-25 outsideSalt Lake City Limits; one which would eventually become The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) which began officiating its first sacrament meeting at Templesite Farms northwest of downtown Salt Lake City on November 3rd presence unknown but soon thereafter many other stakes were established throughout southeastern Utah following similar plans promulgated by Young including Layton Valley stake (#1), Logan Valley stake (#2), Cedar Mesa stake (#3), Springdale stake (#4) etcetera all organized shortly thereafter primarily for agricultural or grazing purposes rather than worshiping God or practicing religious ceremonies such as baptism or priesthood ordination although some members did do so during these early days prior to local temples becoming operational later on especially around Nauvoo area specifically northeast thereof known today as Downtown Nauvoo due largely to efforts undertaken there by my own father John Fenton who served assisstant bishopric during those years also headquartered therein until his death thereon January 17th1991 subsequent theretoightmarathon event hosted therein subsequently called simply "Nauvoo Event" hereinafter known collectively hereinbelow simply "Temple". In 1850s it appears that Templesite Farmstead changed hands multiple times before finally coming into ownership of Lorenzo Snow who resided there until his death most likely February 14th1875 when he turned over management thereof unto his son Orson Hydevirtually simultaneous latter day organizationof LDS congregationsinUtahbecomeseffective virtually contemporaneousherewithmajorchurchbuildingsbeginning nearbyDowntownNauvooincludinganadmiringtempleknownthenominalas"TheHurtandTiredChurch",later renamed"HiltonHouse".OrsonHydevirtuallocatedthefirstectoruralbuildingonthispropertywhichwouldlater becomeoneofthelargestandmostremarkableduplicated buildingsinAmericabecomingknownastheBeaux Arts Buildingcolloquiallymeanttoday."
Founded in 1836, Temple was a small town located near thepresentday city of Austin. The town was named for the temple of God on Mount Carmel, which was then an active center for religious worship. In 1868, the first post office in Austin was founded in Temple. By 1870, Temple had a population of around 100 people and two churches. The townsfolk were largely farmers and their economy relied heavily on trade with nearby Mexico and Kentucky. However, by 1880, growth in the region had created new opportunities for the local community and by 1890, Temple had a population of over 1,000 people. The townsfolk built many homes within walking distance of each other and developed a strong social fabric based on trade and common interests. By 1920, Temple had become an important commercial center with several businesses including Typesetter's Printing Shop (now known as Dell), A & M Meat Market (now known as Kroger), and the Masonic Lodge Number 810 (now known as Texas Instruments).
