In 1881, Temple was founded as a cattle town by the Hays brothers. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Llano River, and in 1892 it became the county seat of Limestone County. A post office was established at Temple in 1871, and the community began to grow quickly. By 1880, there were more than 100 residents living in temple; by 1890 it had reached 500 people. The Panic of 1893 hit hard for many small towns across America; however, temple did not suffer as deeply as other townsstruck by economic instability. In 1895 following passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act which limited competition among American businesses (a response to abuses committed by trusts such as Standard Oil), temples continued to prosper as small businessmen developed new businesses around them such as grocery stores and machine shops that diversified local economies and created jobs outside of farming or manufacturing industries typical of rural areas at this time Robert Ewing organized local companies into one giant corporation with its headquarters located downtown near Beaumont Street between Lamar Boulevard and Slaughter Alley). In 1916 Samuel Morse established Mather Radio Corporation which built radio stations throughoutTexas including three outposts within twenty miles of downtown: Temple-Ralph Overbey (originally KHXO), San Antonio-Edinburg (KBIG)and Midland-Lubbock (KLUV). All three stations used call letters WNAN until 1947 when KHXO became KNUE(NBC affiliate). KBIG moved their studios from Midland to Lubbock after World War II while KLUV maintains studios currently located off IH35 south of Austin . The first settlers to the area that is now Temple, Texas were those who had come from Missouri in 1836. The land that would become Temple was surveyed and bought by George P. Houston in 1837. The town of Houston was founded on the site of what is now downtown Houston on March 3, 1837. Houston became Mayor of Houston on May 1, 1840 and later served as Governor of Texas from 1845 to 1850. During his time as Governor, he built several new public buildings including the Harris County Courthouse which still stands today and the Capitol Building which was completed in1853. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed General Sam H Alexander to command a military expedition against Confederate forces in Texas known as The Overland Campaign. On November 10th, 1861, General Alexander's force arrived at Corpus Christi Bayou where they made contact with some Confederate soldiers who had been entrenched at Fort Bliss near present-day Clear Lake Park. After looting and pillaging among the civilian population of Corpus Christi Bayou for supplies and materiel, Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Buell destroyed both Fort Bliss and Fort Worth Bridge before turning their attention towards cotton plantations around Victoria Hill nearpresent-day Rosenberg Cemetery. This action effectively ended Reconstruction in Texas after over 60 years of effort by many different people
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was organized and it erected a temple to the Virgin Mary on Temple Hill in Austin. The temple became a popular tourist destination and remains an important spot today.
