The community was founded in 1875 by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Kentucky. By 1901, it had a population of just ninety people. But within ten years it had grown to 1,500 people and by 1912 it had become the county seat for El Paso County. In 1930, temple became an independent municipality with its own government and school system. In 1957, Temple annexed Juarez City to its territory and incorporated as a city. Today, Temple remains one of the most vibrant communities in El Paso County and has been praised for its cultural attractions including two opera houses, four museums and more than 100 restaurants and cafes. It also boasts some excellent motorsports venues including two NASCAR tracks - The GlenOak Speedway (formerly known as Pecos Raceway) which is home to both the Grand National Auto Club tripleheader series race weekend each year and USAC's biggest annual open-wheel race at nearby Midway Motorsports Park .

It was not until1839 when Mayor John Humble decided to namethe new town after Samuel Houston because he felt like it had been touched more than any other place by this famous general during his lifetime- an event which led to much speculation as to where Houston actually laid buried! It wasn’t until 1876 when temple was given its current name- likely due to some confusion with neighboring Brownsville- making it one of only a few large American cities given their original namesakes (e.g., Philadelphia, Baltimore). After years of struggles with various promoters tryingto rename or move the city center out from behind its original courthouse squaredue largely to lack of interest from either business or civic leadersit finally came about in 1988 that downtown Templebecame truly vibrant with restaurants and nightlife options becoming available as well as expanded bus servicesand enhanced public transportation for locals and visitors alike. Today’s vibrant downtown district features several large retail stores such as Macy’s flagship storeand Bank One Ballpark; several high profile bars/restaurants including Zappos Pizza & Cigars, Casa Blanca Tequila Lounge & Grill, TGIF Live!, Noodle House BBQ & Chinese Buffet locations; as well as multiple arts venues includingThe Harris [Center] Arts Center andDowntown United Methodist Church (formerly known as First BaptistChurch).
Temple was founded in 1851 as a Methodist church. It became an independent school district in 1922 and then a city in 1938. The current City of Temple was created in 1994 when it amalgamated with the former Temple Township, Houston County.
