It became a ghost town after the vandals destroyed most of the buildings in 1978. Today, Temple is a tourist destination and shrine to Methodists who were active in the town during its early years. The first Methodist church in Temple was built on what is now Fourth Street. Reverend Auld served as pastor from 1869-1877 and his wife, Lucy Brawley Auld preached for many years before she died in 1898. Reverend Jno. Doolittle came to Temple from Fort Worth and started preaching there in 1879. In 1903, Revs John Wroe and Charles Hedges organized the First Methodist Church of Medina County which became known as the “Eagle”Church because it perched on an eagle’s nest atop a hill near Second Street and Orange Avenue (later Third Street). The congregation moved to their present location on Seventh Street near Holcomb Boulevard around 1915 when First Baptist Church opened up next door on that block with more space In 1938, Temple had 2 schools: one open for grades K-8th grade; one for Grades 9-12th grade which closed due to lack of enrollment; however children could still attend Community Day School which had been established since 1924 by Mrs. Addie Haggerty (founder of Holy Cross Catholic School) There were also 3 churches: One Congregationalist; One Presbyterian; One Baptist . As time passed additional churches were added but all except Congregationalist & Presbyterian closed by 1955 In 1965 all but Congregationalist & Presbyterian closed too due to merging with nearby First United Methodist Church In 1978 only Eagle remained open while Holy Cross Catholic School closed down
