Temple, Texas is a town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Temple was founded in 1881 by John Henniker and other pioneers who left Wichita Falls to come to what they thought would be a new land of opportunity. The name of the town comes from the nearby Temple Mount which is also the site of the first Jewish synagogue in America. The Town of Temple was incorporated on February 14, 1886. It lies within the present-day city limits of Austin. In 1907 it became one of twenty-one towns in Texas to become a county seat after Amarillo was annexed by Kerr County along with Haskell and Uvalde Counties. On January 1, 1912 temple became an independent municipality with its own government and court system under the charter dated January 1st 1912 as "Temple County Independent Municipality". On December 12th 1915 citizens voted 50/50 for incorporation into Austin as a city but this vote never took place because then-Mayor Lamar Alexander vetoed it citing concerns about how much money Austin could save by annexing Temple into its larger neighboría
The first Europeans to visit what is now Temple, Texas were Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The area was part of the Mexican province of Tejas and was first explored by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1836, General Sam Houston Granted land to the town of Temple on the south bank of the Trinity River, just east of San Antonio. The town grew rapidly and in 1839, a school and store were built. The town name was changed to Temple City in honor of Chief Justice John Marshall Temple who donated land for the city. In 1840, a millinery shop and bakery were built and in 1845 a post office was established. For many years, Temple City was one of the largest cities on the South Side of Austin. It had a population of over 100 people when it lost its status as an independent city after annexation by Austin in 1907
