In 1850, Latter-day Saints began proselytizing among Mexicans living around Austin northeast of Temple; within five years they had organized a Mormon settlement here known as Spanish Fork (now San Antonio). By 1860 there were more than 1000 Mormons living in Spanish Fork; by 1865 their number had quintupled to 2200+. The first Baptist church in Temple was organized on October 25, 1839. The congregation moved to its current location in 1854. Baptist missionaries from Kentucky started a school in the town in 1852 and the first Baptist Church of Temple was built that year. The second Baptist Church built in Temple was also dedicated on November 3, 1854. In 1865, the first Methodist Episcopal church was founded in Temple and it remained until 1978 when it merged into the Baptist Churches USA denomination.
