Ammunition has a long and colorful history in Temple, Texas. The town was founded in 1881 by John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River Valley and named it after his friend and mentor, General George Custer. The first ammunition products to be made in Temple were shot shells, which were used by residents of the small town to hunt game. In 1905, the first gunpowder factory was built in Temple, and soon thereafter began manufacturing artillery projectiles such as cannonballs and bullets. By 1915, ammunition production had increased tenfold to create munitions for both World War I and World War II. Today, ammunition production remains a major part of the local economy with a workforce that totals over 350 people located within downtown Tempehope. Ammunition production is also responsible for creating jobs throughout the surrounding communities of Temple (including parts of Eagle Pass), Agua Dulce, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Sundance Lake, Sedona Arizona and many more.

Temple is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Juarez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Temple was Antonio de Ulloa on July 3, 1519. A mission was established there on November 2, 1836 by Father José Galindo y Urrutia with seventy-six friars as missionaries under the direction of Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The first church was built in 1839 and dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel according to Mexican Catholic tradition which placed emphasis upon martyrdom or conversion rather than simply faith in a supreme being. In 1847 American traders postulated that they had discovered oil wells in what is now Temple County and began leasing land from the Mexican government for this purpose. In 1850 Brigham Young's wagon train passed through Temple while en route to Cedar City; he stopped at the temple for dinner and preached there on September 21st (the day after his return from Utah). On October 16th Mormon pioneers John Davenport and George Smith arrived at Temple from Independence Rock bringing with them their families who would form the nucleus of what would become Utah Valley culture. As per local custom services were rendered here before burial until 1949 when state law changed notification requirements so all burials must take place within five days regardless of location.
