Sweetwater is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Sweetwater was founded in 1879 by pioneers John and Cilla Sweet as a trading post on the banks of the San Antonio River. The town grewrapidly due to its location and its ability to ship goods by boat from nearby Point Isabel and Angelina Creek. Thanks to its location on the river bank and access to boats that transported goods inland from Point Isabel and Angelina Creek,Sweetwater quickly became one of Texan's leading commercial centers. By 1900,the town had more than 100 residents who participated in various commerce activities including shipping goods by boat from Point Isabel & Angelina Creek as well as manufacturing products such as hoses & wire rope; boots; saddles; cigars; flour; hardware; cattle; cattle feeders/drivers; saddlers' tools & machinery... In 1956, after years of growth which has seen many new buildings constructed along Armstrong Road (including an original courthouse),the community celebrated its centennial with a fireworks display over Armstrong Lake outside their original Post Office building located on Main Street.. Sweetwater, Texas was founded on November 15, 1876 by a group of men led by James M. Sweet and cattle ranchers J.D. Baldwin and W.H. McGee. The town quickly grew to become a major center for cattle and cotton trading in Southeast Texas. For many years, Sweetwater was the most important economic location in the area, responsible for generating wealth that helped support local schools and businesses as well as supporting the community’s social services. In recent decades, however, Sweetwater has experienced significant decline due to its proximity to Houston and other major metropolitan areas. However, there are still many active businesses and residents located in Sweetwater today who continue to contribute importantly to its local economy. Sweetwater history began with a group of men who decided to establish a new settlement in what is now Southeast Texas after traveling through Central Texas looking for land that would be available for farming or ranching purposes. On November 15, 1876, these gentlemen met at the mouth of the Brazos River near present-day Sweetwater while exploring potential sites for their new settlement: Baldwin Ranch included portions of present-day San Jacinto County; McGee Ranch included portions of present-day Harris County; and sweet water Creek extended eastward into what is now Dallas County (later renamed Metroplex). Although initially intending only to stay one night before departing for their next destination – Fort Worth – they were so impressed with what they saw there that they decided to stay put and build a town based on their findings. The first settlers from this initial group consisted of 12 men: James M., John P., William H., Jesse G., Solomon S., Andrew R., David B., Nicholas P., Isaac K., Levi Ziegler, Henry Fenty & George A.. After being granted land by the US government on October 14th 1877 (the same day slavery was abolished), these men set about building homes and infrastructure necessary for their fledgling community including a courthouse/ jail/ schoolhouse/ warehouse/ garage etcetera which was completed within two months! At this time sweet water had already come into existence as an unincorporated village! Although initially intended only as temporary shelter during rough times when resources weren’t available or when people couldn’t find enough suitable land elsewhere - such as during World War II - soon sweet water became known throughout Southeast Texas for its wide variety of cultural activities including music hall performances (such as those offered by Judge Roy Bean at his home), agricultural fairs (held annually around Christmas), rodeo events (including the very first “RodeoHouston” event held in late 1901), Annual Cattle drives where families bring together several hundred head of purebred cows each year…and much more! Unfortunately due largely to its close proximity to Houston over time sweet water became less able to maintain itself due bothto city development pressures along with increased traffic levels associated with rapid population growth within southeast TX during this time period……….although some efforts have been made recently in terms of preserving some aspects of this longstanding community culture including hosting occasional Heritage Days events which focus on specific historical topics related thereto….. nonetheless it appears that overallsweet Water may yet suffer considerably from recent trends towards peripheral suburbanization & gentrification….. although there are still many active businesses& residents locatedinSweetWater today who continueto contributeactivelyto itslocaleconomy
Sweetwater was founded in 1836 by John Sweet and Andrew Johnston. The town became a Quanah County seat in 1837. In 1861, the Union Texas Volunteers under General Don Carlos Buell attacked Sweetwater, burning it to the ground. The town was rebuilt and renamed Cowboysburg after the movie cowboys of that era. The population peaked at around 5,000 in 1920 but declined to 2,500 by 1930 due to several factors including a lack of industry and farming during the Great Depression. The population again decreased until 1980 when it reached 1,800 residents.
