In 1836, the Republic of Texas was created from parts of Mexico and New Mexico. The area now includes Sweetwater County and much of northeastern Austin. The county seat was chosen as Cedar Park in honor of General Sam Houston, who had led the Texan revolution against Mexican rule in 1836.
