These days there are few if any remnants of those original wartime businesses left withinSweetwater itself but there are plenty of artifacts from that era scattered around town courtesy of various museums or private collectors alike! Since its incorporation into city status in 1966, Sweetwater has seen continued growth with annexations surrounding it both northward to serve portions of Carrollton (2008) and southward to include unincorporated parts of Garland County (2010). Sweetwater is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sweetwater was founded by Mormon settlers in 1879. The first people to arrive in Sweetwater were Mormons who had come overland from Utah in 1869. They named their community after the nearby Arkansas River. A post office was established in 1870, and the town's first store opened on November 16 of that year. The name "Sweetwater" originated from a local creek that eroded a sweet water seepage on its banks into which cattle could drink while traveling through the area. In 1881, a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries arrived in Sweetwater and began construction of an agricultural center around what would become known as Pioneer Hall (now called Main Street). The first crop grown there was cotton; later crops included wheat and rice. In 1886, when an electrical wiresmith named George White proposed building a wire factory near Sweetwater to replace those being constructed by hand due to lack of resources at the time, Mayor John Gorman authorised it with one condition: That no slaves be used for labor in the construction project. This white-controlled company became known as White Sulphur & Electric Company and built some of Wichita Falls' most famous landmarks including First National Bank (1914), Wichita State University (1922), and Wichita Falls High School (1963). In 1915–16, Sweetwater joined forces with Wichita Falls to form the Wichita-Sweetwater Federation which promoted industrial development throughout Comanche County; it also helped found other municipalities such as Garland and Midlothian within Comanche County during this time period. In 1937 locals elected Jerald Hensley mayor following his election as president pro tempore of the Texas Senate; he would later serve two terms as governor before retiring at age 80 years old in 1986 When World War II began, many residents decided not to fight because they felt they could do better elsewhere – but about 20% volunteered for military service nonetheless Some notable citizens during wartime include former US Senator Lloyd Bentsen (1948-1972) who served heroically aboard USS Enterprise(CVN 73) during hostilities against Japan; Navy Commander James Wolkentin Commanding Task Force 391 during World War II; Congressman Phil Gramm (D-TX), author of THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE ; sociologist Frank Kappeler ; artist/photographer Floyd McKee ; actresses Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett
