Sweetwater, Texas is a town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex of North Texas. The population was 14,868 at the 2010 census. It has been home to settlers since 1836. Sweetwater is named for David Sweet and Gideon Tate Corporal of Company K, 1st Battalion, Texas Rangers. The first permanent settler in what is now Sweetwater was James Hogg who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and named it Fort Hogg. Many other early settlers followed suit including John Couch and his family who settled near present day Slaughter Road and Elm Street in 1840. David Sweet founded a cotton plantation near what is now West End Drive in 1845 which he named after his older brother Gideon Tate Corporal of Company K, 1st Battalion, Texas Rangers who had died while serving with the unit during the Mexican-American War that year. Sweetwater became an important market for cotton production as well as becoming known as "theBirthplace of Cotton." In 1860, Samuel Tatum organized a wagon train from Arkansas to Santa Fe with 106 head of cattle destined for market in Baylor County,Texas where they were bought by General Tom Connally for use by Confederate army troops during the American Civil War. When Union forces destroyed most of Santa Fe's stockyards along the Texan border in 1865, muchof this cotton was shipped back east via Mobile Bayou through Sweetwater before reaching New York City where it was refined into rugs and shawls before being exported to Europe. Bedford Stroud came through town on his way west to prospect for oil resources in 1901 when he met William Fenton at one of Fenton's mills called "Fenton's Mill" just south of present day Interstate 20 bridge over Buffalo Bayou betweenSweetwater and Arlington Heights (now Dallas). From this meeting Stroud began developing what would become Midland Oil & Gas Corporation which later became ExxonMobil Corp.. sweet water hosted many events leading up to oil boomtown days such as Sam Houston Coliseum dedication ceremonies on July 8th 1948 attended by then President Harry S Truman; Lone Star Conference on October 16th 1953 attended by then Vice President Richard Nixon; First Presidential debate between LBJ and McCarthy held September 17th 1959 at Goodyear Ballpark; First Gulf Coast Stock Show opened April 10th 1970 headlined by Elvis Presley performing live.; inauguration date - Wednesday January 20th 1961 - also attended were two state senators elected that year: Harold Dole (R-AR)and Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX).
