Sweetwater is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. Sweetwater was founded by Texans in 1879 as a trading post on the Red River and has been called "the most beautiful place on earth". The first settlers were men from Louisiana who had come to join General Sam Houston's army during the Mexican-American War. They named their town after General Houston's father, James Fenton Houston (1768-1836). The settlement was relocated several times until it was located near present-day Sweetwater on the Republican River. In 1881, John Hoggquist opened a store and post office in what is now Sweetwater. He labeled the town "Hogwash" because he thought it would promote trade with eastern Oklahoma Territory which then included much of modern Midland County. In 1905, Daniel Boone donated land to make way for an agricultural college and school district that became known as Texas A&M University—now Texas A&M University–Bloomington (TAMU). The university moved into its current location on Boulevard Rd., just south of downtown Sweetwater in 1949.
