In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased land east of the Sabine River and platted the town of Sweetwater around this point on April 1, 1836. On October 2, 1861, during the American Civil War, Sweetwater was sacked by Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg and lost most of its citizens; only about 20 remained when Union forces retook the town on December 12th. Carlos Baca y Bravo took over as Mayor after Bragg's retreat and continued to govern until his death in 1922. In 1959-1960 Vidal Castillo built what is now known asSweetwaters Community House which served as a local government center for sweetwater until it was replaced by present day Humble Hall School District 10 incarnation in 2006-2007 The current mayor is Jerry Martinez with term expiring next year
