The Sweetwater gun target range was opened in 1944 by the United States Air Force. It was located on Waco Rd, just east of town. The range had a single 10-meter steel plate target with a .50 caliber bullet running through it at 200 feet out. In 1951, the range was closed due to budget cuts and reopened as the Sweetwater Gun Range Club. In 1958, the club moved to its present location on State Hwy 317 south of town. The club continued to offer target shooting until it closed in 1984.
