In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sweetwater was a staunchly pro-gun community. The townspeople were so gun-happy that they began to trademark their favorite firearm accessories, such as gun swivels. The trend continued into the 1930s, when Sweetwater became one of the few towns in Texas to pass an anti-liability law prohibiting people from suing each other for wrongful death or injury caused by using a firearm.

Today,Sweetwater's economy revolves around two main sectors: health care services and manufacturing. Health care services are provided by several hospitals within walking distance of town; these include Baylor College Hospital (Houston), Emory University Hospital ( Atlanta), Methodist Medical Center (Dallas) and Baptist Medical Center ( Charlotte). Manufacturing activities have included aluminum production since 1984, leather tanning since 1978 and food processing since 1996. While some areas have seen relatively high levels of development such as retail shopping malls or professional sports teams - such as The Astros - most residents remain hilly country with agriculture accounting for nearly 60% of all economic activity statewide

Sweetwater is a small town in Texas, located on the banks of the Rio Grande. The town was founded in 1881 by General George Armstrong Custer and his wife, Elizabeth Woolridge Custer. The town was named for Sweetwater Creek which flows through the town. Sweetwater became a city in 1907 and then an agricultural center after World War I. In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and soon after, Sweetwater County was established. The first post office in Sweetwater County was established on November 15, 1836. In 1865, Sweetwater County became a part of the new Webb County. On December 12, 1907, Webb County was renamed McLennan County in honor of General Sam Houston.
