The first inhabitants of Sweetwater were three brothers who settled there in 1884. They named their community "Sweetwater" after a stream that flowed through their land. The first store in Sweetwater was built by J.W. Goodyear in 1886. The town's growth began to stabilize around 1910 when developers bought large tracts of land around it for development including many frame houses that still stand today such as those used in "The Beverly Hillbillies". In 1916, local ranchers organized a cattle drive to roundup cows from what was then open range country in nearby Haskell County to sell at auction at the now demolished old courthouse here on Main Street near Market Square which became known as "the Auction House."
