It lies just east of Fort Worth on the Trinity River.The name "sweet water" comes from the creek that flows through the town. Sweetwater has a humid subtropical climate with hot and dry summers and mild to cool winters. The first settlers in Sweetwater came from Kentucky in 1853 and they named it after their sweet water Creek where they had been trading goods with Indians for years before that. In 1870 an act of Congress changed the name to Sweetwater to commemorate General Sam Houston's victory over Mexico in that year at San Jacinto. The banks of Buffalo Bayou now extend into Sweetwater from its eastern edge until it reaches I-35E about 5 miles south of town limits; this has resulted in some confusion as to which side of the bayou isSweetwater! By 1907, when railroad construction began through Tarrant County, many farmers had moved into Sweetwater because railroads made it easier to sell their products statewide. By 1912, when oil production began here, more than 100 businesses operated out of SweetWater including grocery stores, hardware stores and several breweries - all within one mile (1 km) of each other on Main Street between US 287 and I-635. The new industry brought new people and businesses into town as well; by 1920 there were 11 churches, 15 schools and more than 150 families living here full time or part time in single family homes or farmhouses scattered throughout what is now downtown area including First Baptist Church (founded 1872), Consolidated Gas Company Building (1892), Masonic Temple No 1 (1912), Post Office Annex building (1914) along with numerous commercial buildings dating back to 1920 such as local bank building (1876), livery stable(1893), flour mill(1900), ice cream parlor(1920). Today there are only a few example buildings left remaining from those days such as First Baptist Church still standing today also known as Gibson's Chapel while other properties likePost Office Annex have been replaced by newer structures such as I-635/US 287 junction restaurant

Sweetwater is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,050 at the 2010 census. Sweetwater is the namesake of the river that flows through it. The town was founded in 1892 by John Witherspoon and his wife Sarah Sweetwater, both natives of England. It has been owned by various families since its founding and has seen many changes over the years. The first settlers to Sweetwater were two brothers named George and Jacob Whitaker who arrived in 1892 from Ohio. They built a log cabin on the banks of what is now known as Sweetwater River. For a time, sweet water was also referred to as "Wittewater". In 1903, however, Isaac Newton Beecher bought property adjacent to where present day Sweetwater stands and renamed it "SweetWater". He had heard about a creek called Wittewater east of Dayton which he thought could be made into a good irrigation system for his farmlands nearht Dayton. Beecher's house still stands today along with some other early settler homes in Sweetwater such as the Turner House (now part of the Medina County Courthouse). From 1904-1910, Beecher served as mayor of Sweetwater while also working on developing some aspects of town government including streetlighting and building paving stones for city streets. After World War I when most agricultural production died off in America due to War Production Board regulations; . . . sweet water experienced rapid growth with people coming from all around for what was then just a small farming community located about 25 miles northeast of Austin on Interstate 10 (the only access). Many businesses were started here such as an ice cream parlor/store operated by Mrs Florence McGuire that opened in 1922 and continued until her death in 1988; an auto garage run by L P Hwy Roadside Service that became one of Medina County’s largest employers during this time; several restaurants including Cactus Café open late serving cowboy style food averaging $3 per order through 1949; local photographer J B Smith opened his own photo studio soon after moving here from Conroe with film processing capabilities providing affordable prints throughout East Texas.; A post office began operating outofthe original cabin between 1916-1920 under name “Piney Fork” but eventually changed its name to “SweetWater” due to trademark conflicts with nearby Piney Fork Post Office which had been established earlier that same year by James Fenton Welch (1862-1924) who ran an advertising agency located at 124 E 5th St., later becoming partof Macy’s department store chain.; A school district formed within this new school district included students from all surrounding townships within Medina County before annexation into larger Houston School District starting operations in 1963.; Finally after years(?), planningand construction culminated with incorporation intoHouston Municipal Utility District on July 1st 1971 following ratificationof voter approval via special election held two days prior thru May 31st.). According to oral histories collected over time by members of various community organizations meeting at various locations across Medina County such as those mentioned above or conducted more recently by Dr Laura Kappenberg at Lone Star Historical Museum located inside City Hall Annex Building #5602 S Main Street Suite 301), events leading upto incorporation into Houston Municipal Utility District took many varied forms: deliberations among elected officials regarding future services offeredby HHUD including powerline maintenance & reconnection services; meetings among citizens pertaining specifically thereto Held annually preceding any vote(s); notification letters sent home informing residents approximately upcoming HHUD meetings agendas & items subject To Consideration; extensive public opposition mounted against incorporation resultingIn series Of effective public relations campaigns waged By Mayor Beecher And HIS Department featuring heavily used First Amendment Rights To FreedomOf Speech Act Protected Citizens Against Government Interference campaign signs posted Throughout Townsquare ; numerous individuals& groups actively involved In organizing OppositionToHHUD Incorporation Including Local Newspaper Owners Who Reportedly PaidFor Publicity stunts Displayed On Streets All Over Town PriorTo HGUD Vote;; finally On July 1st 1971 Following ratificationof voter approval via special election held two days prior thru May 31st.),"sweet water" formally became "Houston Municipality Utilities District" - see www.houstongov dot com for more information.)
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded with the goal of independence from Mexico. The Texans were not alone in their quest for independence. Many other western settlers had volunteered to fight against Mexican rule, and when war broke out they quickly realized that they needed a government to represent them. On July 6, 1836, a group of men meeting at Folsom Prison voted to form a provisional government led by James K. Polk. The new government was named the Republic of Texas and it quickly declared itself an independent country. In November 1840, Texas successfully seceded from the United States and became an autonomous republic under the leadership of Sam Houston. The Republic of Texas lasted until it was overthrown in 1902 by Mexican forces during the Mexican Revolution.
