Sweetwater is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Sweetwater was founded in 1877 by James A. Sweet and his family as a farm community on the Brazos River near present-day Arlington. The name was later changed to Sweetwater because of the sweet water found there from nearby Deer Park Lake. The first post office in Sweetwater was established in 1875, and its first settler, John Hayshaw, served until 1881. In 1879, William Jardine built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself. Jardine became one of the early settlers of Sweetwater due to his mineral rights for oil production located along the Brazos River near present day Arlington. By 1886, all but three of the original families had left for other settlements in North Texas or Arkansas due to harsh weather conditions during that period known as "the Great Plains drought." In 1902–1903, SweetWater participated in an excursion organized by then-Governor Alfred Mclntyre to see if oil could be discovered in Midland County while he still held office; no oil was found but gas drilling did occur at this time within what would become Midland Energy Corporation (MEC) today. After Governor Mclntyre's resignation due to political corruption charges in 1903, local businessman James A., Jr., took over management of MEC's operations and renamed it "SweetWater" after his father's farm community which he had helped establish thirty years earlier when he also lived near Arlington and had some mineral rights for oil production with fellow business man Wm Hayshaw Sr.. James A.'s grandson currently serves as Mayor and Director of Community Affairs for SweetWater Municipality which includes parts of Midland County including Arlington Heights where you can find James A.'s old home still standing today atop . . . another old landmark on Main Street - now used as a business incubator/office building! In 1924 (30 years after Wm Hayshaw Sr.'s death), Jeff Cramer became manager/director/founder & CEOof Eagle Ford Petroleum Corporation headquartered here since 1916). In 1965 Eagle Ford merged with Texaco Incorporated creating Houston Industries Incorporated – one company among many such acquisitions during that decade leading up to deregulation that ultimately led to hyperinflationary forces throughout much Western America during those heady days before Wall Street crashed worldwide back into recession…and ended with American jobs being outsourced once again! When Jeff Cramer retired from Eagle Ford presidency effective December 30th 2003 age 70 years young “Thank You” said many people who have worked closely w/ him over these past 3 decades!!! And we are not done yet folks…he leaves behind 2 very active sons - Wes (Weston) & Billie Lynn Cramer who both work professionally w’ their father at various companies within our governmental system! They are followed by numerous grandchildren thruout TX living out their own lives here on our beautiful planet called Earth! We will continue making our presence felt through education & service until we go away!!! 🙂 In 1899 local resident Tom Prentice donated land north of present day Main Street eastwardly across Cedar Creek towards Highway 6 so future residents could build homes without contributing towards infrastructure costs like roads or water systems necessary for rural communities like themselves growing up around large bodies of water like Cedar Creek back then!). In 1927 Big Spring Dam replaced Little Spring Dam upstream from current day Crossroads Drive allowing irrigation growth westward adjacent to Baylor University while also providing flood control resulting in an increase LOGS flowed into Elmendorf Reservoir from 1920 thru 1930 rising gradually culminating with a peak storage capacity exceeding 4000 acre feet prior to WW2!! Today sweetwaters fisheries offer fresh trout stream fishing opportunities year round plus access via duck hunting season starting Nov 1st !"
