Sweetwater, Texas is a small community located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The community was founded in 1881 by the Sweetwater Oil Company. It became a city in 1907 and then an independent town in 1958. The population of Sweetwater reached 9,500 in 2000. The area that now makes up Sweetwater was first inhabited by the Caddo Nation. By 1827, the Creek Nation had also settled hereabouts and traders traveled through this area frequently to sell goods they had acquired along the Mexican border. In 1881, the Sweetwater Oil Company arrived with its own rigs to develop oil reserves near this locality. At first, these men leased land from local farmers for their production; however, after several years of drilling and developing these resources at a high rate of speed, it was decided to build an entire town on the site! This new town would be known as "Sweetwater." construction began on June 3rd of that year and soon residents were living and working within its walls! The original civic center (named for Mrs. John Hixon) served as the heart of the new town until it burned down in 1928 due to an arsonist’s incendiary intentions! A new civic center was built shortly thereafter which still stands today – this time named for Mayor Clyde Witherspoon! As sweet water developed into one of Hudspeth County’s most important communities over ensuing years, so too did its economy! Manufacturing played an important role during this time as well with many businesses setting up shop hereta serve those who worked within or sold goods across the county line. Services such as restaurants and retail shops quickly followed suit oncesweet water became a full-fledged municipality! Today's shopping options abound with everything from small towns boutiques to large chains like Walmart! Additionally, special events are common throughout each year including family reunions/Christmas celebrations/Symphony concerts etc.; making SweetWater feel not just like your average small-town America but also very much its own entity featuring unique traditions dating back more than 100 years!!!
