In Sweetwater, Texas, the history of firearms is intertwined with the history of its residents. The town was founded in 1876 by two brothers, John and George Sweetwater. It was named for Colonel James H. Dearborn, a General in the Union army who fought in the American Civil War. In 1916, Sweetwater hosted an international defense exhibition which featured American and German rifles and pistols from across the country. It lies on the Arkansas River and is adjacent to Midland and Wichita Falls. The community was named for the Sweetwater Creek that flows through it. The town started as just a few houses but soon grew into an agricultural center due to its fertile land and access to water resources. In 1924, sweet potatoes were introduced to Sweetwater by settlers from Hutchinson, Kansas. The town became known for its produce, which included tomatoes, apples, pumpkins, cornmeal mush and other goods exported to other parts of America. In the 1960s and 1970s local businesses began shutting down due to strikes or competition from larger companies in nearby Midland or Wichita Falls. However, this changed with the opening of Interstate 35W which made Sweetwater an easy drive away from major cities like Houston or Dallas. This also led to more people moving into the town which helped keep it relatively unchanged since then apart from some new construction projects such as a high school and senior living complex in 2006-2007

Sweetwater is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlement in Sweetwater was made by settlers from Georgia in 1836. A post office called Sweetwater was established in 1840, and the town was named for General James B. Sweet (1796-1875), who served as Commandant of the 1st Texas Infantry Regiment during the Mexican-American War and as military governor of New Mexico Territory from 1846 to 1848. In 1873, a group of men led by Hiram Thornton organized a gristmill on Buffalo Creek and began to produce wheat flour for local markets. Two years later they erected a log cabin near their mill to serve as their shop and office. In 1878, they added a storehouse and barn to their business venture. The Thornton family operated the mill until 1901 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills in nearby Fort Worth and Pecos City. In 1907, Sweetwater residents voted to change its name to Sweetwater Township after Township Judge John Hogg (1863-1940) recommended it for that purpose when he became commissioner of hood county land titles under Governor James M. Cox (1892-1910). The town of Sweetwater, Texas was founded in 1873 by a group of farmers who had come to the area from Illinois. The town became an important center for cattle and agriculture, and its roads and bridges helped connect the surrounding countryside with the larger city. Sweetwater also played a significant role in the history of the Confederacy. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, many residents of Sweetwater decided to move to Mexico City in order to avoid becoming British subjects. The town never regained its original importance, but it continued to be an important local community until the early 21st century.
