The town was founded on October 10, 1875 by James Wickersham and his wife Emeline Clements Wickersham as a trading post named "Wick's Ranch". The name was changed to Sweetwater in 1907. In 1911, the post office moved to its current location and the name of the town became official. The first store in Sweetwater opened in 1909. A school was built in 1912 and it burned down in 1916. The community began as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail in 1847 and grew rapidly during the late 19th century when it became an important railroad junction. In 1907, Sweetwater incorporated as a city. The growth of industrialization led to the decline of Sweetwater during the 1960s and 1970s and its population peaked at 1,500 in 1990. However, recent growth has resumed with some new development and renovations taking place around town. Like most towns in Vernon County, Sweetwater is named after General Sam Houston (1759-1836), who fought for Texas independence from Mexico. The first post office was established in 1847 by Elisha Gray Richardson and was called "New Hope." When San Antonio became a City Limits Town limits frontier outpost on December 17, 1871 under Act of Congress No. 624 entitled "An Act to provide for an organization of Vernon County," Mayor John Sharp petitioned for incorporation as such; but no action was taken until February 4th when Akins Post Office opened with 10 inhabitants receiving mail thereon from all parts of Texas including Nacogdoches & Austin etcetera... [thus] New Hope continued to serve as an outpost until March 12th when it closed due to lack of business ventures by citizens or because San Antonio had outgrown its need for an outpost within limits so that annexation could take place without any issue). sweet water timeline

Sweetwater is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1872 by Captain John Sweet and his wife, Anna. The population was 2,036 at the 2000 census. The first post office in Sweetwater was established on May 12, 1872. The first settler to arrive in what is now Comanche County was Captains John Sweet and Anna of the USS Constitution. They were both natives of New York City where they had been married in 1851. Captain John Sweet's family had operated a mill here since 1827. A sawmill built by Captains John Sweet and James Doan went into operation around 1886; it still stands today as a part of the town center. In 1903, General Slade renamed the town "Sweetwater" after General William Taney who commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A cotton gin and two other mills were built between 1916 and 1922 within walking distance of each other replaced with new parks beginning in 1969 when county commissioners decided that sites for new parks should be scattered throughout the community instead of all concentrated at one point like earlier editions did. In 1978, Mayor Tom Dooley ordered demolition of some old buildings including an Artesian well which contaminated water supplies for many residents living near it before being taken downiangially following public outcry over environmental degradation across much of Comanche County at that time due to oil production from slick formations then under development along Interstate 10 just east of downtown Wichita Falls (now Wichita). At least twenty dwellings located on or adjacent to Well No 1 have been demolished since 1978 inclusive but there are still many unidentifiable remains remaining associated with this particular site as part of civic pride for those who live nearby today!
Sweetwater was founded in 1847 by General Hugh W. Kelly and his brother, Colonel John M. Kelly. The town was named after the Sweetwater River, which flowed through it. The Kelly brothers were the first white men to permanently settle in what is now Sweetwater County. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river and began trading with Indians. In 1851, they organized a county government, which also included a justice of the peace and land offices. The railroad arrived inSweetwater in1885, and it soon became an important factor in its growth. By 1923, Sweetwater had 6 stores and 24 businesses. It also boasted a high school (now Texas Tech University), two churches (one Baptist), five schools (including one for African Americans), three hospitals (one for mental residents and one for children), four ranchers’ huts, and several churches including one Roman CatholicMission chapel.
