Sweetwater is a small town in east Texas, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Ft Worth metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Sweetwater County was Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on August 2, 1797. He named it after his native Spain and founded San Antonio de Padua Mission on anual site that he had discovered while exploring the area west of present-day Austin, Texas. Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna built a Rancho Estancia grant near present-day Sweetwater on October 14, 1824 for José Vasquez de Aranda and his brother Francisco Vasquez de Aranda as part of their concession for Rancho San Fernando Adobe (later Rancho Friarco). In 1836, cattleman George A. Smith claimed land east of the Trinity River along what is now Interstate 10 and called it "Sweetwater". In 1840, he sold 80 acres (30 ha) southeast of downtown to James Hogg for $200+. Hogg subdivided this property into two tracts—the Townsite and East Fork—and laid out Cross Plains Road as its main street. The town was organized by Act of Congress on November 3, 1840 under the name "Sweetwater" from land granted to James Hogg by President John Quincy Adams with instructions to be destroyed when Union forces overran Texas during the American Civil War but fortunately never did so. The first store in Sweetwater opened in 1861 when Rufus Fenton opened a general store at 7th & Elm Streets. Many businesses were initially located in downtown or across Cross Plains Road until more recently there has been much development around I-10 only south of Main Street including new hotels/motels and restaurants which have drawn attention from both locals and travelers alike since opening in 2006 about equidistant from downtown core services except for one major bus stop directly across Main Street which offers no services other than parking lot access
