The first settler to live in Sulphur Springs was John Beasley in 1872. He built a cabin on the present site of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Beasley also ran a grocery store and post office in Sulphur Springs for many years until he sold it to Wm Cook in 1912. Cook operated it until his death in 1938. In 1948, Julius Siddle bought the grocery store from Cooks heirs and continued operation until his death in 1984. MrSiddle was an early investor in computer software development company, Sun Microsystems Inc.. In 1998 he donated over $1 million to help build new schools within the Sulphur Springs School District In 1904, H C Pritchard started what is now known as The Peoples Store which remains one of the most popular tourist attractions around here today thanks to its unique architecture (it's still open). Other businesses that have been around for many years include: Weiser's Drugstore - since 1918; Mrs Smith's Bakery - since 1954; Mayfair Tavern - since 1965; Biltmore Theatre - since 1987; Belle Isle Pool & Spa -since 2001 In 2006, Mayor Tom Seamans announced that he would be running for re-election against current City Manager Don Rankin . As mayor Seamans had focused on education and economic development issues during his time as mayor while ranking member Rankin has been more focused on city services such as infrastructure maintenance and code enforcement
