Sulphur Springs is a small unincorporated community in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It lies east of the mouth of the Brazos River on US-60 and west of US-281. The community was founded by Mormons in 1859 as a waystation on their journey from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Utah. Sulphur Springs had a post office from 1901 to 1903. The community was named for the sulphurous gas found near it. It was laid out in 1872 by John Wickersham and James Fenton as part of an effort to create a cattle ranch at what is now Sulphur Springs North State Park. The post office closed in 1903 because no one wanted to serve request for service that came too often from residents who could not find horses or wagons to bring their mail home.
In 1881, Sulphur Springs was a small village in Tarrant County, Texas. A post office was established at Sulphur Springs in 1882, and the population of Sulphur Springs grew to about 60 people. In 1889, the town of Sulphur Springs merged with neighboring Bradford to form a new town. On July 1, 1898, Sulphur Springs incorporated as a city. The population of Sulphur Springs peaked at over 1,000 people in 1907 before declining rapidly during the Great Depression. In 1941, the United States Military Academy at West Point moved from New York City to nearby Pembroke Park and also annexed part of Bradford. This left only about 100 residents living in Sulphur Springs while West Point remained an independent institution. By 1951 the number of inhabitants had declined to 20 and by 1978 it had fallen to 10.
