By 1860 there were ninety nine families living inwhat is now Sulphur Springs with an average of six to seven children per family because there were no schools or churches until after 1870 when two Baptist churches were established: First Presbyterian Church (1870) and Second Methodist Church (1872). In 1865 Amos Dickson erected a sawmill on Elm Creek which provided water for many homes and businesses until it burned down in 1922 In 1894 Wm Tatum donated land north of present day Hwy 59 for a new street name change from Spring Garden Road to US 69/40th St., honoring Wm Tatum's father General James Tracy Tatum who had died that year while fighting Forter Mexican forces at Monterrey, Mexico during the Alamo Siege In 1896 Frank Neely donated land between US 69/40th St and FM 620 west of town to create what became Happy Valley Ranch where he raised thousands of dollars for local schoolchildren through his visits each week . When Gussie Gilmore opened her grocery store on Main Street in 1920 she was one of only four women selling groceries outsideHouston until that point .
