In the early 1800s, Sulphur Springs was one of the most important towns in East Texas. It was home to a prosperous cattle and farming community, and it also served as a major center for trade with the surrounding countryside. The town's history can be traced back to 1814, when surveyors discovered what is now Sulphur Springs while mapping the area. At that time, it was part of the Hudspeth County seat of Corinth. The first settlers in Sulphur Springs were farmers who purchased land from the local Indians. By 1832, however, enough people had moved into Sulphur Springs to make it an official town. In 1839, voters authorized Mayor James A. McKinney to build a wharf on present day Main Street and create a town government under his leadership. The first block of town building material was delivered by wagonload from Carthage (later Austin) on July 1st of that year. Sulphur Springs enjoyed some success during its early years as a small town: It had its own post office, school system, jail, theatre and several businesses such as grocery stores and dry goods warehouses. However, by 1840 things were going downhill for Sulphur Springs: There were no new residents arriving to take advantage of its good properties or stable economy; businesses started closing down; and crime rates increased markedly. This coincided with military hostilities happening in Texas at this time: Mexican forces had taken control of December 31st 1840; Santa Anna's forces invaded East Texas on February 14th 1841;and General Sam Houston's army pushed southward towards San Antonio de Bexar on April 6th 1841 condemning Sulphur Spring to extinction as a civilian settlement - until American soldiers arrived there in 1865 to retake it from Mexico). Despite this tough reality - which made life difficult for many inhabitants - many people continued living and working in their homes until they finally left for good in 1865 or 1870 due to social unrest caused by US military presence thereabouts (the last known resident being Mrs Francis J Hogg who died at age 96 years old in 1984). Fortunately for Sulphur Springs' future though, conditions changed drastically after General Sam Houston recaptured East Texas from Mexican forces on November 15th 1850 following an all-out siegeOperation Alamo – one of history’s largest cavalry engagements ever fought between modern-day Americans and Mexicans – which ended with more than 800 Texans dead or missing including almost all the original defenders of San Antonio de Bexar (though just 8 men out of 260 remained alive when General Houston took possession). As soon as news spread through East Texas about Houston’s victory over Mexican troops at Palo Alto he ordered preparations begin immediately for what would become known as “Ain’t No Liberty Here But Liberty Now” – an Americanization campaign designed not onlyto reelect President George Washington but also drive out any remaining Spanish influence in America following their successful attemptto regain control over Texan soil after two centuries absence! And so began exactly what would become known today as "The Lone Star State" – an event that haseno doubt helped spur economic development & increase cotton production throughout much SouthernTexas throughout recent decades! As events unfolded leading up to secessionist sentiments developing among various groups within our rapidly growing state & nation during late 19th century TX we must ask ourselves…..When did citizens within our Town start thinking about leaving their HomeTown because Of Aggressive Federal Military Presence?

Sulphur Springs had a post office from 1881 to 1907. The Sulphur Springs community was located on the banks of the San Jacinto River. A mill and gristmill were built in 1881 by John Hogg and others as part of a land grant given to Jameson Woodworth by the Mexican government. The mill operated until 1907 when it burned down. In 1906, Jameson Woodworth donated land to build what would become Sulphur Springs High School. The school was opened in 1909 and became one of the first high schools in Webb County. In 1925, Sulphur Springs married its first wife, Lillie Belle Gibbs (1892-1976). That same year saw the opening of an oil field near Sulphur Springs which led to growth for the community and school. In 1955-1956, Sulphur Springs annexed parts of Wichita Falls Today, Sulphur Springs is home to a variety of businesses including several grocery stores as well as churches and other nonprofit organizations

With mines still active today such as Brush Hill Mine and Neches Mining District (now known as Eagle Ford National Forest), Sulphur Springs has continued to be an important community both economically and historically
