It is part of the Austin–The Woodlands Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sulphur Springs was founded by settlers in 1853 as a log drive on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. In 1865, Sulphur Springs became a town when it was designated as one of three towns within San Antonio County by an act of Congress under the name "New Braunfels". The original courthouse and jail were built there in 1876-77. The post office opened in 1886 and remained in operation until it closed on September 15, 1959. In 1909, Sulphur Springs Dam was completed and became the first dam on Buffalo Bayou to be constructed using explosives rather than hand tools or saws. This project also provided irrigation for agriculture near present-day Sulphur Springs and other parts of San Antonio County; it also increased water quality for residents downstream. In 1951, Sulphur Springs High School opened its doors to students from all over Austin after being closed for many years due to budget cuts by then- Superintendent Driscoll Dooley. After several years of growth and renovation, sulpher springs high school finally reopened its doors on November 7th, 2006 with new athletic fields (including a brand new football stadium), a library/museum which houses many interesting artifacts from early local history to current day events (such as exhibits about alternative energy development), as well as classrooms that have been renovated into state-of-the-art learning environments for students across all grades levels! A brand new commons area has been added adjacent to this campus which includes gardens with ponds and fountains providing stunning views of downtown Austin!
