Sulphur Springs, Texas is a town in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Sulphur Springs is located on a small creek that flows through the town center and provides water to many homes and businesses. The creek was also used as a cattle run in the early days of Sulphur Springs. On December 12, 1912, Sulphur Springs was founded by J.M. Grimes and his brother-in-law Elisha Ford with $3 worth of lumber from Nacogdoches, Louisiana. On July 5, 1916 they sold their interest in Sulphur Springs to Jno Waddell for $10 per acre (the first township). Mr. Waddell named his new community after himself – Sulphanacadie (pronounced "soul-phal-ah"). In 1924 he donated land for what is now called Memorial Park which became one of the most important areas in town because it doubled as both a school and fire hall during World War II when many residents had to leave their homes to serve in the war effort. In 1876, Sulphur Springs was founded by James A. Sulphur and wife Lydia B. Smith in what is now the city of Austin, Texas. The Sulphur Springs area was originally a cattle ranch that was part of the Hudspeth County seat at San Jacinto. In 1881, the Sulphur Springs school district was created from parts of neighboring Hudspeth and Travis counties. In 1886, James A. Sulphur died and his widow continued to operate the business until her death in 1922. After Mrs. Sulphur's death, her son John A. Sulphur took over operation of the business until his death in 1951; then his daughter Anna Crouse took over operations until her death in 1960. In 1971, Anna Crouse's granddaughter Leila Bigham assumed control of the business which continues to be run by descendants today. The original company town at Sulphur Springs consisted of a few homes and a primary store on Main Street with some other businesses nearby including a blacksmith shop, livery stable and an assay office (later renamed the Texaco oil depot). The town grew rapidly during its early years as people came to live and work near the wells discovered in the area such as James A., Jr.'s well site on present day Elmendorf Road just east of FM 548 (now US 281). By 1893 there were more than 50 residents living in or around Sulpher Springs with most working for either Mr. James A.'s or Mrs.'s family businesses including groceries shopping, farming etc.; but also taking pleasure trips downriver for fishing outings or simply spending time at home watching dogs play fetch or reading children's stories outside their homes while parents cooked dinner outdoors on hot summer nights! Miss Anna Crouse recalled that "the lifeblood" of any community "was always music so we would go into houses all night long playing airs from old hymns we remembered from when we were kids." The influx of new people meant that many dances were held every weeknight downtown where everyone could come out for dancing after putting their chores away for evening meal; these evenings are still enjoyed to this day by both young and old alike! Sulfur Springs experienced major growth following World War I thanks to new federal government orders requiring large amounts of gasoline being produced domestically; this led to increased production at newly built refineries along I-35W throughout Southeast Texas which made it possible for farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers instead of going through local merchants who had difficulty getting credit because Of Prohibition sales restrictions placed on alcoholic beverages statewide . Anti-trust investigations soon followed resulting in several companiessuch as Texaco ceasing operations within TXA due their ownership by anti-trust regulators - forcing much smaller businesses like JMSSCO Incorporated (now ExxonMobil) into bankruptcy as they could not compete with larger multi-national corporations enjoying pre-Prohibition profits margins averaging 20%. On July 6, 1876, Sulphur Springs was founded by the citizens of Fort Worth. The town sprang up around a small creek that ran through the area. It was named after the Sulphur Hill in Dallas, Texas. The first post office was established in 1879. In 1886, Sulphur Springs became a county seat and on October 1, 1912 it incorporated as a municipality under the name Sulphur Springs Borough. On December 12, 1916 Sulphur Springs lost its incorporation status when it merged with Horse Branch to form Fort Worth County. In 1984, Sulphur Springs was renamed to honor General George Custer during World War II and various other local heroes who have been honored in town history.
