Sulphur Springs Creek was named after a salt water spring near present-day Sulphur Springs. The first humans to live at Sulphur Springs were the Comanche and Kiowa Indians who hunted there for food. In 1836, General Sam Houston founded an arsenal here and called it Fort Houston. In 1845, the Republic of Texas was formed and Fort Houston became its capital. The town grew rapidly because of its military importance and by 1850, it had over 1,000 residents. The fort was decommissioned in 1865 and the city developed around it. The original downtown included three buildings: the churches (1846), the post office (1851), and the courthouse (1854). The cotton gin which later became known as Cotton Exchange Building was built in 1852 by John Witherspoon Smith. It served as both a public health clinic and storage facility until 1923 when it was razed to make way for what is now City Hall Park. Another important building in early Sulphur Springs was Driggs House which housed a school, jail, storeroom, doctor's office, bakery/cookshop, blacksmith shop, wagon wheel forge and other toolsmithing workshops during the 1830s- 1840s period when these works were done out of necessity due to lack of metalurgical supplies available nearer settlements east of San Antonio Bay. Sulphur Springs began as a small community in the early 1800s. The first post office was established in 1819. By 1860, Sulphur Springs had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, Sulphur Springs became the capital of the Texas Panhandle under the leadership of General Sam Houston. After Sam Houston's death, Sulphur Springs became an independent city and remained so until it merged with Austin in 1901.
