In 1922, Sulphur Springs began to develop into a bedroom community for the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex due to its close proximity to Trinity University and other major employers in that region. By 1970, however, development had slowed and only 8 businesses remained in town according to the 1990 census results: 6 restaurants (3 of which are still open today), 2 auto dealerships (both now closed), 1 real estate company (a former bank that has since been converted into condominiums), and 1 motel (now closed). Development resumed after Hurricane Ike hit the area in 2008 when new homes were constructed along with business space for developers who would rebuild following the event’s devastation wrought by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina
Sulphur Springs was founded in 1854 by James Sulphur and his family. The Sulphur Springs Post Office opened in 1857, and the town developed around it. In 1865, Sulphur Springs became a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. The town experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, but declined after World War I. It regained its former prominence during the 1920s and 1930s as a center for cotton production. However, the town's fortunes declined again in the 1940s as air raids destroyed much of downtown Sulphur Springs. Today, Sulphur Springs is an agricultural community with a small population.
