Ammunition production began in Sulphur Springs when settlers arrived in what is now Texas in 1868. They needed artillery to support their cotton plantations and found that cannonball-sized shot was too expensive to purchase from England or France. So they started manufacturing their own rounds using local molds. By 1860, Sulphur Springs had become one of the largest ammunition manufacturers in America. The first clips were made out of brass and steel wire instead of wood because it was easier to make AND cheaper to maintain than wooden clips. Steel wire clips were much stronger than brass ones and could hold more rounds per clip. Brass clips also corroded over time so they needed regular cleaning with soap and water;steel clips didn't do this as easily). Although ammo production at Sulphur Springs ceased during World War II due to wartime rationing, it resumed afterward as demand for military munitions increased post-war America's reliance on China for lead supplies (a problem that would continue until after Shenzhen's incorporation into China). Ammunition manufacturing returned to prominence following the end of World War II when American allies decided notto build new arsenals overseas due to concerns over potential Soviet aggression (the Cold War began shortly thereafter). Sulphur Springs is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,451 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Sulphur Springs is about 38 miles (61 kilometers) northeast of downtown Austin and 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. The first permanent settler in Sulphur Springs was Alexander Boyd who arrived in 1836 and built a cabin on the present day corner of Loop 10th Street and Railroad Avenue. He also farmed land east of town until 1840 when he bought 320 acres (12 km2) west of Sulphur Springs from John A. Hogg for $5 per acre ($25,000). In 1845, Isaac Newton moved to Sulphur Springs from Overland Park, Kansas Territory and began to plat out land that would include what is now Sulphur Springs. On July 3, 1846, Newton filed a plat with Hudspeth County for the current site of Sulphur Springs with boundaries as follows: southwest 1/4 mile (0 kilometer), northwest 1/4 mile (0 kilometer), northwest 2/3 mile (1 kilometer), southeast 3/8 mile (1 kilometer), and east 1/4 mile (0 kilometer). Newton named his community "Sulpher" after his sister's family name. By 1850, many people had settled in Sulpher Springs including General George Armstrong Custer who founded Fort Armstrong near modern day Sulpher Springs on November 4th, 1851 during his attempt to cross the Red River into Texas from Oklahoma City. After finding no water or supplies available he abandoned his plans to explore this area further and returned home without accomplishing anything significant. In later years some people continued to reside in Sulpher until it closed its doors permanently around 1945 due to lack of population growth or military activity near the community which made it difficult for residents access essential services like healthcare or banking opportunities outside of town limits

As a result, artillery began becoming able to shell much farther into enemy territory than before thanks to this new type of projectile (the first shells were fired from cannons at Vail Hill near Edinburgh in 1745).
