The first store opened in 1882 and the first post office was established in 1886. In 1907, Sulphur Springs became incorporated as a municipality with a population of 50 people. On March 30, 1912, the school district merged into the Lubbock Independent School District which has since remained one of the most comprehensive districts in East Texas. The town has experienced several challenges over the years including being affected by two major oil spills that occurred near it in 1970 and 1991; becoming part of an agricultural redefined area after its ZIP code was changed from 79401 to 81509 during statewide deliberations to expand education opportunities for residents; however, recent initiatives have made it an attractive place to live and work; experiencing some growth following annexation by Haskell County during efforts to consolidate many unincorporated areas within Haskell County; however, there remain concerns about potential development impacts on water resources and general environmental deterioration due to high levels of sulfates present throughout much of town Today, Sulphur Springs offers ample opportunity for social life through its multiple clubs and organizations including golf courses, country clubs, softball leagues, bowling leagues as well as restaurants that offer healthy foods such as yoga classes and meditation sessions among others
The Sulphur Springs community was founded in 1875 by John A. Sulphur and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the sulfurous gas springs that were located near the original site of Sulphur Springs. The Sulphur Springs Hotel, now a museum, was built in 1887 and served as the town's main business center until it burned down in 1944. In 1899, a railroad station was built adjacent to the hotel and became one of the first stations in Texas to be electrified. In 1913, Sulphur Springs Elementary School opened and remained an important part of the community until it closed in 1970. In 1925, sulphUR SPRINGS SCHOOL DISTRICT #2 erected a school building on what is now First Street West within the limits of SULPHUR SPRINGS COMMUNITY; this building became known as THE WHITE HOUSE after World War II when President Harry S Truman moved into it from his home at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
