On January 1st 1850, Sugar Land became a municipality with its own charter and council formed by ordinance number 904a from then until annexation into Harris County on July 24th 1860[3]. The first known grocery store opened at 331 Neches St on October 6th 1861,[4] just two weeks after incorporation into Harris County[5]. In 1865 local entrepreneur James Moseley built what is now known as First Baptist Church west of Main Street (now State Highway 610).[6][7] By 1870 total retail sales amounted to $2 million statewide[8], making Sugar Land one of Texan's leading economic centers during this time period along with Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth.[9][10] The Civil War brought many changes to Sugarland following General Sam Houston's victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto Creek on November 26th 1846: property values plummeted due to war costs; citizens were forced off their homes; schools were closed; businesses were looted or destroyed; general stores failed; cotton prices went up; and many African Americans lost their jobs through attrition or indentured servitude – all while white residents continued to live off their land boom timeshare investments like those made by John Hogg prior to independence from Spain “in order not” to leave their plantations behind".[11][12][13][14] However despite these struggles during Reconstruction days "the town quickly recovered its properties... [and had ] more than doubled its population by 1890."[15] During World War II sugar production decreased due mainly because American industry switched focus towards munitions manufacturing instead but also because refined sugar turned into high fructose corn syrup rather than natural cane juice concentrate which accounted for 75%+ of prewar exports[16][17]; however some key companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company still operated in SugarLand during wartime years including Best Western Hotel where soldiers stayed before departing for overseas service beginning September 1942 until May 1945 when they moved out onto IH 10 enroute to Hawaii - i
