Sugar Land was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and Ulysses S. Grant as a cattle market and shipping center on the Red River. The town grew rapidly, thanks to its strategic location on the banks of the river, its ferry system, and its sugar refining capabilities. In the 1850s, Sugar Land became an important center for slave trade from Texas. The town's plantations produced sugar cane and cotton until the 1840s when those industries went out of business due to cheaper production in Cuba. After Confederate forces withdrew from Texas in 1865, much of the town burned down due to lack of supplies or fires caused by Union soldiers during their occupation. For most of Reconstruction following Reconstruction legislation was passed which aimed to punish former Confederates who had not surrendered (such as white men who had bought into slavery). However many people in Sugarland reverted back to plantation life after Reconstruction ended because there were no new opportunities for them outside of farming or manufacturing jobs that didn't require manual labor."
