Sugar Land, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 161,745 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to the Houston Astros baseball team. Sugar Land is located in Brazoria County on the eastern edge of Houston metropolitan area. By 1908 sugar beets were being grown here for Processing Company #1 which produced about 2 million bushels per acre (10 metric tons/ha) for local consumption and export; this led to town growth until World War II when land prices escalated so rapidly that many small farmers could not keep up with Replacement Farmstead Development plans – they were forced to sell their lots at high prices or leave town altogether About 1/3rd through annexed land formed present day Sugar Land while remaining parts including much older towns such as Seaworld Park (founded 1865), Spring Valley (founded 1798), Tomball Landing (founded 1840), Bridgeport Village (founded 1861) all passed away without leaving any residue behind except for some cemeteries still extant today within walking distance of most major thoroughfares Some notable landmarks still extant today include Saint John’s Episcopal Church – oldest building in town founded 1867; Rice University sports complex – completed in 1935 near current site of NRG Stadium; ExxonMobil refinery complex - completed 1947 near present site where Astrodome now stands Industry concentration has resulted over time from tight regulation by state government followed by aggressive investment activity spearheaded by private interests which have outpaced attempts at public oversight
