Sugar Land is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brazoria County and home to the Sugar Land Convention Center. The first settlers in what is now Sugarland were white men who came from Georgia in 1836. They built a cabin on theranch of Brushy Creek and named it "Sugar Land." In 1839, they founded the town of Gainesville and sold land to other settlers. In 1847, two brothers named John Clements and James Polk bought 640 acres (250 ha) west of present-day Sugarland for $1 per acre ($14 per ha). They named their settlement "Polkville," after President James K. Polk's father-in-law. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a major trading center used by traders from all over South America and Europe. By 1860, Polkville had a Post Office, jail, schoolhouse, cotton gin, Methodist chapel (the first church in Texas), three stores, five homes, and 100 cattle that grazed on four hundred acres (30 ha). In 1865–66 an act known as the Grant Act granted voting rights to African Americans in Texas; this led to a rapid increase in black business activity within sugarcane farming communities throughout ruralTexas. One result was increased competition for jobs among white farmers who could not offer blacks employment opportunities outside their fields because of racist discrimination against them at every level of society. A group of young men led by William Humble formed the Houston Cotton Mill Company Limited Partnership with capital totaling $10 million dollars raised through public subscription between 1907 and 1912 which aimed "to improve living conditions for Negroes" within twenty years without achieving success due to various factors including lack of technical assistance available from government auspices during those years[1]. After several failed attempts starting in 1909,[2] White Southerners organized themselves into Afro-American League (ASAL) seeking political power through organization instead of individualism towards successful integration into American society through education institutions such as law schools that would develop leadership qualities necessary for success once inside American society
