Sugar Land, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Harris County. The population was 1,640 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous municipality in Houston County. It annexed Clear Lake in 1997 and became a city on December 12th, 2000. Sugar Land is located on Buffalo Bayou within Harris County. The town site of what is now Sugar Land was originally called "Houston", but because of its close proximity to San Antonio, Texans began calling it "Houston" because it resembled Spanish word for "city". In 1836, General Sam Houston bought an area west of today's downtown Sugar Land from six Dutch settlers with the intent to establish an American outpost on Buffalo Bayou as a commercial center for upstream oil production. However, only one acre (0.40 hectares) was purchased and no construction took place; instead Houston built his first home there - modestly named Mount Pleasant - and used it as headquarters for his army until he surrendered at faces Worth in 1845 after leading a successful campaign against Mexican forces during the Mexican–American War." The first post office in what is now SugarLand opened in 1847; by 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating out of what are now downtown streets including Main Street which became known as City Hall Avenue when City Hall moved from Mount Pleasant to its current location on Congress Ave just east of modern day Museum District on October 9th, 1893. In 1897 when Saltillo Creek ran through present-day Sugar Land and Clear Lake formed part of that creek bed underflow creating artificial lakes such as Rice Lake created by damming up Saltillo Creek alluvium deposited along this Creekbed by glaciers about 10 million years ago during Ice Age), Sugarland became known as "Clear Lake City" or simply Clearlake because although land adjacent to present day Clearlake swamp had been improved by Native Americans (who built Fort Point Lighthouse near present day Bagdad Road/I-610 inside Fort Bend County), they did not rename their new town after themselves even though Clearlake River flowed through their boundaries! A year later on December 12th 1900 Mayor James Hogg designated “Sugarland” portions of Houston neighbourhoods Jasper Heights and Montrose due to growing sugar cane industry within these areas – first time anything like this had ever happened in Houston! This designation made annexation legal so that annexation proceeded without any vote or discussion! The name change followed annexation proceedings where residents voted overwhelmingly (over 60%) to change their name back to “Houston” less than one year after incorporation! The growth rate for sugar cane continued unabated until 1907 when local farmers decided to machinesize harvesting since profits were increasing too fast! A new mill was built south off I-610 between 610 Wacker Drive & South Loop 610 E just north ofpresent-day Toyota Center making sugar products available outside of downtown Houston making Sugarland one stoplight away from every major city center across America!!! Although some people still refer to “sugarLAND” they should be more correctly referred to as metropolitanHouston area which has a combined population exceeding 2 million people stretching from Austin TX down into DFW TX thru Corpus Christi Caller ID

In 1859, the Texas Legislature granted land to Houston for the city of Houston, which included much of what is now Sugar Land. The town prospered under Houston's leadership, and in 1901 it was renamed after him. The city of Houston annexed parts of Sugar Land in 1963, making it an all-Cities City municipality with a population of over 1 million people today. The history of Sugarland is complex and includes both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, sugarcane farming played an important role in its development as a town; many homes were built fromadraged logs that were salvaged from sugar plantations. This architecture has been preserved throughout the years and can be seen at various locations around town such as Main Street or Market Square. One local legend says that if you knock on a door in Sugarland during election season you will often hear “Hurry up get your ballot before they run out” because this is how much voting power was exerted through agriculture back then! On the negative side, some residents fled to Dallas following annexation into Dallas in 1963 due to high school tuition prices there (and also because more opportunities for employment were available). Some remain there today while others have moved away altogether. Despite this history, Sugarland remains one of the most vibrant communities in Brazoria County; it has maintained close ties with its surrounding rural areas since its inception as a small town
